Rabat Hosts Moroccan-French Security Talks to Strengthen Counterterrorism Cooperation

Abdellatif Hammouchi, Director General of National Security and Territorial Surveillance, received yesterday, Thursday in Rabat, the Director General of France’s Internal Security, Céline Berthon, who was accompanied by a high-level security delegation.

According to a statement from Morocco’s Directorate General of Territorial Surveillance, the talks focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation in security matters and consolidating the partnership between Morocco and France to confront regional and international challenges, particularly terrorist threats in conflict zones, with a special emphasis on the Sahel-Sahara region.

Both parties underscored the importance of bolstering joint security operations between Moroccan and French services, operations which have repeatedly proven effective in neutralizing terrorist threats at both regional and international levels.

During the meeting, the French security chief commended Morocco’s contribution to securing the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. She also discussed with Hammouchi the coordination required to ensure the success of the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco in 2025, as well as the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which Morocco will co-host with Spain and Portugal. Discussions highlighted the need for sharing expertise and operational intelligence to address major security risks surrounding these global events.

Talks further covered the reinforcement of cooperation mechanisms to counter hostile acts that threaten the security of both countries, including combating foreign espionage and related activities.

The statement concluded that this meeting reflects the strategic importance of Moroccan-French security cooperation, which stands as a consistent and effective model of partnership in the fields of counterterrorism, anti-extremism, and combating irregular migration, rooted in a joint commitment to develop a forward-looking, preventive approach against transnational criminal and terrorist threats.
