Rabat - Madrid crisis: Spain fails to 'condemn' Morocco through European Parliament

The Spanish move aimed at prompting the European Parliament to “condemn” Morocco in the case of “the use of unaccompanied minors in the migration crisis in Ceuta” did not have the success that was planned, as Parliament retracted the use of the word “condemnation” and was modified by the word "rejection”, which is considered softer in Diplomatic tone.

In this regard, the European Parliament approved today, Thursday, a draft resolution related to “rejection” of Morocco’s use of unaccompanied minors in the migration crisis in Ceuta. 397 parliamentarians voted in favor of resolution, 85 voted against it and 196 abstained.

The European Parliament considered that "Morocco's use of unaccompanied minors as a means to exert pressure on Spain" is "rejected", but on the other hand, it refrained from using the word "condemnation" that was coined in the first draft report by Spanish parliamentarians.

This decision, which was instigated by the Spanish deputies, constituted a controversy in the corridors of the European Parliament, as it caused embarrassment to a number of political groups within it, and the Czech Member of Parliament, Tomáš Zdechovský, was one of the European parliamentarians who criticized the Spanish move, as he tweeted on his Twitter official account saying that "The Sanchez government by pushing aggressively for the adoption of a EP resolution against Morocco only seeks to hide its successive mistakes, while involving EU in this dangerous path",

The vote on the resolution, according to a number of observers, whose number did not exceed 400 votes, revealed that it does not reflect the number of ordinary votes for decisions of an urgent nature, which indicates that the draft resolution came with a move and pressure from Spain, and was not with full European approval.

What confirms this fact, according to the same sources, is that the decision, in general, does not reflect the position of the European Union, as the executive bodies of the European Union welcomed, in the words of both the European Commissioner for Enlargement and the European Neighborhood Policy, Olivér Várhelyi, and the spokeswoman for foreign affairs and security policy, who confirmed on June 8 that "the European Union and Morocco have maintained, over the years, excellent cooperation in the field of migration, which has led to very good results".

Worth mentioning that The Arab Parliament announced its support for Morocco, as it called on the European Parliament not to involve itself in the crisis of relations between Morocco and Spain, noting that the crisis between the two countries is a bilateral crisis that can be resolved through diplomatic means and direct bilateral negotiation between them, without there being any reason to turn it into a Moroccan-European crisis.
