Rough seas expected along Morocco’s Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts from Friday

Rough seas and dangerous waves are expected along Morocco’s Atlantic and Mediterranean coastlines starting Friday afternoon, the Directorate General of Meteorology (DGM) has warned.

In a maritime weather bulletin, the DGM said the phenomenon will affect the Atlantic coastline from Tangier to Agadir, where wave heights coming from the west to northwest are forecast to range between 6 and 8 metres.

The same source indicated that waves of 4 to 6 metres are also expected in the Strait of Gibraltar, while wave heights of between 3 and 5 metres are forecast along the Mediterranean coast from El Jebha to Saïdia. The highest wave activity is expected on Saturday, January 24.

During this period, high tides are also forecast along the Atlantic coast, with sea levels ranging between 3 and 3.8 metres, particularly during the early morning and late afternoon.

The DGM further warned that strong westerly winds will blow from Friday afternoon along the Atlantic coast, the Strait of Gibraltar and the Mediterranean coastline. These conditions could persist until Sunday, January 25, 2026.

Authorities have advised the public to avoid all maritime activities and to stay away from beaches, seawalls and coastal structures during peak wave periods, citing the risk of being swept away or buried by powerful waves. The DGM also urged residents and visitors to closely monitor local weather updates and follow instructions issued by maritime and local authorities.
