Senegal Reaffirms Support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan Following UN Resolution on the Sahara

Senegal has reaffirmed its firm support for Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara region, welcoming the recent adoption by the United Nations Security Council of Resolution 2797, which recognizes the Moroccan Autonomy Plan as the only serious and credible basis for resolving the long-standing regional dispute.

The position was made clear in a Joint Communiqué issued on Monday in Rabat, following a meeting between Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, and Senegal’s Minister of African Integration, Foreign Affairs and Senegalese Abroad, Cheikh Niang, who is currently on a friendship and working visit to the Kingdom.

In the communiqué, Senegal hailed the “historic” adoption of the UN Security Council resolution on 31 October 2025, describing it as a milestone that reinforces international recognition of Morocco’s autonomy proposal as a viable and sustainable solution within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty.

Minister Niang reiterated his country’s “unwavering and firm support” for Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty over its entire national territory, including the Sahara region. He reaffirmed Senegal’s backing of the autonomy initiative proposed by Morocco in 2007, calling it “the only credible, serious and realistic solution” to achieving a political settlement of the dispute.

Minister Bourita, for his part, expressed Morocco’s appreciation for Senegal’s consistent and principled stance, describing it as a reflection of the deep understanding in Dakar of the historical and political dimensions of the Sahara issue and its importance for regional stability and integration.

Bourita also welcomed Senegal’s decision to open a Consulate General in Dakhla on 5 April 2021, underscoring it as a symbol of the enduring solidarity and strong diplomatic ties between the two nations.

The meeting between the two ministers forms part of the close cooperation and longstanding friendship that have characterized relations between Morocco and Senegal, both of which have consistently worked to strengthen bilateral coordination across political, economic, and regional levels.
