Strengthening Partnerships: U.S. Ambassador Duke Buchan Arrives in Morocco

The new U.S. Ambassador to the Kingdom of Morocco, Duke Buchan, has arrived in Rabat, where he marked his first official moments in the country by raising the American flag over his residence, assisted by members of the U.S. Marine Corps, according to a statement published by the U.S. Embassy on its official social media accounts.

The Embassy accompanied its announcement with a message affirming that the new ambassador looks forward to strengthening the strong ties between Rabat and Washington, and to celebrating 250 years of Moroccan-American friendship, one of the oldest diplomatic relationships the United States maintains with any nation.

Ambassador Buchan’s arrival coincided with the publication of his first message from Morocco on X, in which he wrote: “From growing up on a farm, to building a career on Wall Street, to now serving as the U.S. Ambassador to Morocco—I’ve learned how powerful teamwork can be. Grateful to meet our Moroccan and American embassy colleagues for the first time today. Their dedication is the behind-the-scenes force strengthening the partnership between our two great nations every single day.”

Buchan, whose professional background spans both the financial sector and public service, is widely seen as bringing a profile that underscores Washington’s intention to further advance its multidimensional strategic partnership with Morocco—covering security and defense cooperation, economic investment, and the development of clean energy projects.

Rabat and Washington are set to celebrate a quarter millennium of diplomatic relations in the coming years, dating back to Morocco’s recognition of U.S. independence in 1777—making this historic relationship a key pillar of both countries’ foreign policy agendas.
