The tragedy of Melilla: This is why Morocco should not pay 'the tax' alone

No one doubts that what happened last Friday along the border of Melilla in northern Morocco is a human tragedy after the deaths of more than 20 Sub-Saharan immigrants while trying to overcome the border by force and violence.

Regarding the death toll of this violent attempt to pass the fence of Melilla, it is considered the most tragic immigration attempt between Morocco and Spain for decades.

When the news became circulated in the world media, several NGOs and some political parties in Spain belonging to the opposition scrambled to condemn Morocco, although Moroccan forces had tried to stop the immigrants flow over the Melilla border which is considered as the Spanish and European borders.

A lot of parties and organizations have targeted Morocco and described him as the one who stands behind the brutality of what happened in Melilla, without knowing the situation and how actually was there.

To clear the image a little bit, the attempt of breaking through the borders of Melilla was committed by almost 2 thousand clandestine immigrants, most of them were equipped with white weapons, iron sticks, shovels, and stones. They were ready for war as one of them said later to the German newspaper, Dutch Welle.

Moroccan forces had to use power to deal with the huge numbers of immigrants, but the death of 23 individuals from Immigrants was not completely the result of the intervention of the Moroccan forces. Some field reports talk about the stampede that occurred among the immigrants which killed some of them, while some others (immigrants) fell from the top of the fence.

Anyway, Morocco has its share of the responsibility for what happened, the Moroccan forces had to intervene, before the day of the immigrants’ deadly attack over the Melilla border, the flow of immigrants in the suburb of Melilla had been happening for months.

In meantime, Spain and the European Union have their big share of responsibility, due to their migration policy, in addition to that, they have to know what Morocco faces in order to secure their borders although Morocco is also a victim of illegal immigration, as numbers of clandestine immigrants break troughs its southern and eastern borders every day.

The illegal immigration mafias have their biggest share of what happened in Melilla, because of them, hundreds of immigrants come daily to the outskirts of Melilla or Ceuta to seize an opportunity to break through the fences as individuals or collectives.

Morocco should not pay "the tax" of what occurred last Friday in Melilla alone, as some parties want for mostly political purposes, because there are others who should assume the responsibility as well.
