The United States has once again reaffirmed its full support for Morocco's sovereignty over its southern territories, stating that the autonomy proposal presented by Morocco represents "the only serious, credible, and realistic solution" to resolve the dispute over the Sahara.
This position was reiterated during a meeting between U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Morocco's Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccans Abroad, Nasser Bourita. The American official reaffirmed Washington's commitment to the stance declared by former President Donald Trump, which recognizes Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara.
According to a statement from U.S. State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce, Rubio emphasized that the United States considers Morocco's autonomy proposal as the only viable framework to reach a fair, lasting, and mutually acceptable solution. He called for the immediate launch of negotiations based on this proposal, confirming Washington's readiness to facilitate progress in this regard.
In a broader context, the two sides highlighted the strength of the strategic partnership between Rabat and Washington in areas of security, peace, and development. They also discussed ways to deepen bilateral cooperation, particularly through building on the achievements of the Abraham Accords and expanding trade exchanges to benefit both countries.
Furthermore, the U.S. Secretary of State expressed his country's appreciation for Morocco’s role, under the leadership of King Mohammed VI, in supporting efforts to bring stability to the region and contributing to a better future for its peoples, including both Palestinians and Israelis. Rubio reiterated the U.S. call for the immediate release of all hostages held by Hamas.
