US Embassy Chargé d’Affaires visits Fez To Demonstrate U.S. Commitment to Regional Development in Morocco

U.S. Embassy Chargé d'Affaires David Greene visited the Fez region on April 8 and 9, to demonstrate U.S. commitment to regional development in Morocco During this visit, David Greene reviewed several projects that demonstrate how the U.S.-Morocco partnership supports this historic region’s economic and civic development, especially among youth, wrote a statement by the US embassy in Morocco.

Chargé d'Affaires Greene met with Fez-Meknes region Wali Said Zniber, Fez-Meknes Regional Council President Mohand Laenser, as well as education, business and youth leaders, to talk about "how the United States is working with our Moroccan partners to invest in the people of the Fez region, creating opportunity and employability through projects that foster education, civic engagement, entrepreneurship skills, and private sector investment."

"After meeting with so many exceptional Fassis over these two days, I believe the region has a strong future, as we emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic," Chargé d'Affaires Greene said as quoted in the statement. “The United States, working closely with Moroccan partners, is committed to supporting the region’s long-term development.”

The visit's focal point was the official launch ceremony for "Listen to my Voice," a USAID program aimed at encouraging youth, women, and people with disabilities to play a larger role in civic life, helping shape the development of their communities and the wider Fez-Meknes region. The program is being implemented by Mouvement Alternatives Citoyennes (ALCI) as part of a MAD 5,4 million (approximately $600,000) grant. Chargé d'Affaires Greene’s visit also included meetings with a wide range of institutions and organizations supported by the United States.

According to the US embassy, Greene's visit took place as the United States and Morocco celebrate "200 years of friendship" throughout 2021. The countries are marking the bicentennial of the American Legation in Tangier, America’s oldest diplomatic property, via a year-long celebration of the cultural, economic and security partnership between the two countries.
