The Secretary General of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Véron Mosengo-Omba, said on Tuesday in Rabat that the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), scheduled to take place in Morocco from December 21 to January 18, “will be the best ever organised.”
Speaking during a press briefing on the state of preparations, Mosengo-Omba described the upcoming tournament as a “global” event and predicted it would be an edition of “all records,” both in terms of organisation and public engagement.
He praised the quality of the “world-class infrastructure” put in place by Morocco, stressing that stadiums, training facilities, transport networks and hospitality services meet the highest international standards and provide the necessary conditions for the success of Africa’s flagship football competition.
“We have never staged an AFCON with such enthusiasm,” the CAF Secretary General said, noting that the scale of the tournament is already evident in ticket sales, with more than one million tickets sold so far.
Morocco is hosting the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time since 1988, at a moment when the Kingdom has significantly upgraded its sports infrastructure as part of broader preparations for major international events, including the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which it will co-host with Spain and Portugal.
The AFCON will be played across several Moroccan cities, with matches scheduled in newly built or renovated stadiums, reflecting the country’s ambition to position itself as a continental and global hub for sports events. CAF officials have repeatedly pointed to Morocco’s experience in hosting large-scale competitions and its organisational capacity as key factors behind the confidence surrounding this edition.
The tournament is expected to attract millions of viewers across Africa and beyond, reinforcing AFCON’s growing international profile and underlining Morocco’s role as a central player in the development of African football.
