Morocco’s national football team head coach Walid Regragui said on Saturday that the Atlas Lions are fully determined to win the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), stressing that his players are ready to shoulder the responsibility of competing on home soil.
Speaking at a press conference in Rabat ahead of Sunday’s opening match against Comoros at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, Regragui said the team is aware of the high expectations surrounding the tournament, which runs from December 21 to January 18 in Morocco. “Our goal is to win the trophy, and the players are ready to have a good AFCON,” he said.
Regragui underlined the importance of the opening fixture, noting that every match carries significance. “We represent Morocco in every game,” he said, adding that players must manage their emotions, remain calm and confident, and show humility and respect toward their opponents.
Addressing concerns over injuries within the squad, the national coach said the team is prepared to adapt to last-minute setbacks. “The national team has been preparing for these uncertainties for a long time,” he said, insisting that every selected player will be ready to step up when needed.
Regragui also acknowledged the pressure that comes with being considered favorites for the title, describing it as “positive pressure” that encourages better management of physical effort, tactical discipline and mental strength.
On the fitness of PSG defender Achraf Hakimi, Regragui praised the player’s commitment, describing him as “an example to everyone” because of the work he has put in to be ready for the tournament.
Concluding his remarks, Regragui said Morocco has all the elements required to succeed, citing motivation, unity and strong support from the home crowd. He added that difficult moments are inevitable during the competition, but overcoming them would only make a potential triumph more meaningful.
