Morocco’s national head coach Walid Regragui said on Sunday in Rabat that the Atlas Lions are fully focused on defeating Zambia and securing qualification to the next round of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) as group leaders.
Speaking at the pre-match press conference ahead of Monday’s Group A Matchday 3 clash, scheduled for 8 p.m. at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, Regragui stressed that finishing first remains the team’s main objective. “We have the opportunity to secure first place against Zambia and stay in Rabat, which is our primary objective,” he said, adding that the squad “will continue to improve.”
The national coach expressed strong confidence in his players, describing the group as united and determined. “I have full confidence in this group, which is truly united. We know what we need to do to keep progressing, while understanding that we have to suffer in order to perform and grow,” Regragui underlined.
He also pointed to progress in the team’s mentality, noting that the national side has made significant gains in terms of mindset during the tournament. “We have gained a lot in terms of mindset within the national team,” he said.
Regragui added that the technical staff is working to meet the expectations of Moroccan supporters, while acknowledging that criticism can play a constructive role. “We are doing our job to make our supporters happy,” he said, noting that criticism can be “beneficial in helping us improve and perform at a higher level.”
On the availability of Achraf Hakimi, the coach confirmed that the Paris Saint-Germain full-back will feature against Zambia. “What is certain is that Achraf Hakimi will play tomorrow,” Regragui said, adding that a decision will be made on whether he starts the match. He noted that the game will mark Hakimi’s first appearance at this AFCON.
Morocco currently leads Group A with four points, ahead of Mali and Zambia, who both have two points, while Comoros sit at the bottom with one point.
In the other Group A fixture, Mali will take on Comoros on Monday at 8 p.m. at the Mohammed V Sports Complex in Casablanca.
