Modi Highlights Peaceful Resolution to Ukraine War, Reinforces Strategic Ties with Russia

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged an immediate end to the conflict in Ukraine, stressing the need to achieve lasting peace as a matter of global humanitarian concern.

Speaking during his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Tianjin, China, on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit, Modi said: “We have held regular discussions on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. We welcome all recent efforts aimed at establishing peace. We hope all parties will move forward constructively. A way must be found to end the conflict at the earliest and bring about lasting peace. This is a call of humanity as a whole.”

The Indian Prime Minister also shared a statement on his official X account on September 1, writing: “Had an excellent meeting with President Putin on the sidelines of the SCO Summit in Tianjin. Discussed ways to deepen bilateral cooperation in all sectors, including trade, fertilisers, space, security and culture. We exchanged views on regional and global developments, including the peaceful resolution of the conflict in Ukraine. Our Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership remains a vital pillar of regional and global stability.”

Modi’s remarks highlight India’s dual approach: reinforcing its strategic partnership with Russia while maintaining its long-standing call for diplomacy and dialogue to resolve the war in Ukraine.
