Morocco’s General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM) has issued an orange-level weather alert, warning of significant snowfall, a sharp drop in temperatures, and strong wind gusts expected to affect several provinces from Tuesday to Thursday.
According to the alert, snowfall ranging between 15 and 25 centimeters is forecast above 1,200 meters starting Tuesday at 11 p.m. in the provinces of Ifrane, Boulemane, Khenifra, Al Haouz, Tinghir, Taroudant, Ouarzazate, Midelt, Azilal, and Beni Mellal. The same period will also see lighter snowfall of 5 to 15 centimeters above 900 meters from Tuesday at 11 a.m. to Wednesday at 8 a.m. in Taza, Chichaoua, Figuig, Driouch, Jerada, Taourirt, Sefrou, Al Hoceima, Guercif, Berkane, and Oujda-Angad.
The cold wave accompanying the snowfall is expected to push temperatures down to as low as minus 13 degrees Celsius in Tinghir, Al Haouz, Azilal, Beni Mellal, Ifrane, Midelt, and Boulemane. Other provinces, including Jerada, Taourirt, Khenifra, Sefrou, Al Hoceima, Guercif, Taza, Chefchaouen, Figuig, Chichaoua, Taroudant, and Ouarzazate, are likely to record minimum temperatures ranging between minus 6 and 0 degrees Celsius during the same period.
In addition, strong winds with gusts of 75 to 85 kilometers per hour are forecast from Tuesday at 11 a.m. to Wednesday at 3 a.m. in several regions, notably Boulemane, Midelt, Nador, Jerada, Figuig, Driouch, Al Haouz, Tiznit, Tinghir, Taroudant, Sidi Ifni, Ouarzazate, Guelmim, and Assa-Zag. Authorities have urged citizens, particularly in mountainous and exposed areas, to exercise caution and follow official guidance as the adverse weather conditions unfold.
